Updates to Our Education Program & Discount

November 2, 2015

Over the last year, we’ve been working to develop stronger offerings for education. We’ve listened to educators using littleBits, and we’ve learned that what you need from us is not just Bits. We’ve heard a strong call from our educators for more content about how to integrate littleBits into instructional settings, lessons to use in various teaching environments, opportunities to interact with the wider littleBits educator community, and the desire for professional development.

We have started to focus on these additional needs: we developed the Educator’s Guide and will soon be publishing guides focused on STEAM learning and using littleBits in library makerspaces. We have added new features to our library of lessons and are working to expand it steadily. This fall we launched Teacher Tuesday events at our Soho store and held webinars on multiple topics for educators. Finally, we recently announced our new Education Programs, including the littleBits STEAM PD course, which reflect input we’ve gotten from educators about the need for training and better guidance about what combinations of products make sense.

We are dedicated to continuing to invest in supporting educators and making our products and services more tailored to the unique needs of classrooms, libraries and other kinds of learning environments. What we’ve done so far is just the beginning, and in 2016 we will be placing more attention and focus on content, learning and community resources to help make our teachers even more successful.

As part of this shift, on January 1, 2016, we will be changing our Educator Discount from 15% to 5%, which is more in line with other hardware providers in education. We realize this may seem like a disappointment, but we assure you it is part of our bigger commitment to put more resources towards developing the tools, training and support educators have requested.

A few things about the new discount that goes into effect January 1, 2016:

  • It will apply to all of our products and services, whereas our current 15% discount does not apply to certain products (e.g. the Pro Library).
  • It will allow us to provide you greater discounts at select times of the year

We are letting our educator community know with two months’ notice so that you can take advantage of the 15% discount through the end of the year and make any necessary adjustments.

We are more dedicated to educators than ever and plan to continue offering products, services and free resources that help bring 21st-century learning and inventing into classrooms everywhere.

The littleBits Education Team

Q&A

Is littleBits changing its focus away from education?

This couldn’t be further from the truth. We are doubling down on our investment in the education vertical. The team is growing, and we continue to look for new ways to deliver better content, a stronger community, and additional professional service offerings required to empower educators and students.

Why couldn’t the discount remain the same?

As we look to scale and get STEAM tools into the hands of more educators, our education business costs escalate. Adjusting the discount allows us to 1) expand our content and service offerings to meet the needs of educators, and 2) build and scale our wholesale education business, providing even more ways for educators to access our products. In general, it allows us to invest more heavily in providing a better experience for educators.

What if I have a quote open but can’t get the required approvals in time to close before December 31st?

We will be reviewing these on a case-by-case basis and will do what we can to honor quotes created in 2015, but we recommend getting your quotes in and POs approved before December 31st to guarantee the 15% discount.

I am looking to buy littleBits in bulk, can I get a discount better than 5%?

We are willing to look at bulk discounts based on the size of the order. Please get in contact with our key accounts team by filling out the form at the bottom of this page or emailing [email protected] to discuss the size of your order.
