Did you know you can connect you Bits to LEGO®? It’s true! The beginner tips and tricks collected here will help you connect your Bits to any standard LEGO bricks using the Brick Adapter.
The brick adapter enables you to easily snap your Bits to LEGO® bricks. Each pack comes with brick adapter studs and sockets.
Sorting by type
When starting a project, it’s helpful to sort brick adapters. Turn them all over with the littleBits side facing downward. Socket brick adapters have larger circles than stud brick adapters. Arrange them into two piles. Push one pile aside. Turn the remaining brick adapters over and arrange them in a row from left to right. Match up the single and double hash marks, as shown in the diagram below. Use these hash marks as a guide when you connect longer circuits to LEGO. Next, make a second row with the unused pile.
Using brick adapter sockets
With brick adapter sockets, you can mount your Bits on top of LEGO bricks. Simply attach the adapter to your bricks, and press the feet of your Bits into place. When placing a socket brick adapter on LEGO studs, the sockets go in between the studs, not on top of them.
Using brick adapter studs
With brick adapter studs, your Bits will defy gravity! Simply attach the adapter underneath your bricks and press the feet of your Bits into place. Check out Wireless Controlled AWD Lego Car by tmw2015.
Building around loose parts
In Bubble Charmer, Emily_littleBits builds around the battery and fan to hold them in place.
In Noisy Scoreboard, Kelsey_littleBits shows us how to use LEGO to build walls up around Bits. In this case, she creates a well for a pinball to land. Notice how she keeps the light sensor and buzzer exposed to allow light and sound through.
Care and handling of Bits
When pressing your Bits, brick adapters, and LEGO together, take care to only press on the colorful bitSnaps, not on the white mounting boards or components.
To separate Bits from brick adapters, tug on colorful bitSnaps, not circuit boards or wires. Bits like the p1 power and w22 wireless transmitter have extra feet under the circuit board. Gently pry under these feet with a purple screwdriver or fingernail.
The DC motor is equipped with feet that fit into brick adapters. Here I’ve used stud brick adapters to connect two DC motors to the underside of a LEGO Bitbot.
The servo mount also has feet that fit into brick adapters. Simply snap a servo into a servo mount and insert the feet into a brick adapter. This is a great way to convert a LEGO Bitbot into a drawbot.
Building horizontally with SNOT
Sometimes your invention will require Bits to face outward or even towards each other. To do this, you will need studs not on top (SNOT in LEGO lingo).
Technic bricks, angle plates, brackets, headlight bricks, fences, hinges and bricks with studs on the side are excellent options. If you don’t have these special bricks, insert a base plate in between LEGO studs. Presto! You’ve got SNOT.
