The era of “fitting in” is over.

This generation is about diversity.

January 21, 2015
Every once in a while it’s good to step outside ourselves and realize we are part of something bigger. Yesterday I watched the State of the Union Address by President Obama, and I felt deeply inspired and energized and most importantly proud to remember that we are contributing to a larger human and social mission. Here is one of the most powerful quotes:

“I want future generations to know that we are a people who see our differences as a great gift, that we are a people who value the dignity and worth of every citizen — man and woman, young and old, black and white, Latino and Asian, immigrant and Native American, gay and straight, Americans with mental illness or physical disability.”

This deeply resonated with me, and deeply resonates with littleBits as a company. I would take it one step further and say this is not just about America, but a goal to strive for in the whole world. Every day we think about how we can create universal and boundless tools that can empower people regardless of their age, nationality, gender, academic background and personal preference. We believe in everyone’s right to understand the world around them, an increasingly technological world, so that they are not intimidated, or locked out, or rendered passive consumers — but instead are inspired and empowered to learn new things, and to invent and re-invent their world.

Here at littleBits, we still have a long way to go to achieve our mission of “putting the power of electronics in the hands of everyone”, but we are actively working towards being more universal and accessible every day. We embody this mission in our team, that’s why we are in New York, one of the most diverse urban cities in the world. That’s why we have a team that spans people from the U.S., Greece, Canada, Trinidad, Mexico, Guiana, Spain and New Jersey! (jk). That’s why our team is half women, and not exclusively in PR, but in engineering and software and design and leadership. Thats why we refuse to make a product that is gender-specific or even age-specific. Inspiration, empowerment and technology literacy have no market vertical. That’s why we organize our teams and our products around design and science and technology — we cherish the intersection of disciplines.

The era of “fitting in” is over; this generation is about diversity. Diversity breeds diversity and diversity breeds open-mindedness.

Thank you to every one of our team members, customers, supporters, the community around us, and everyone who shares our vision of equality and opportunity. Any small contribution any of us can make to the world is worthwhile; it’s how we remember we are part of something bigger.
