You've Got Mail

by littleBits

Published on November 18, 2014

Hear AOL’s nostalgic “you’ve got mail” whenever you receive an email from a special someone. In a world of overflowing inboxes, make sure you never miss an important email from Mom.

How it works:

This synth speaker plays a prerecorded sound clip from the mp3 player when triggered by an action through IFTTT.  IFTTT (If This Then That) is a service that lets you connect to different web apps through simple conditional statements. We used IFTTT’s Gmail channel to specify the circuit to sound only when an email is received from a specific person.

RECIPES

How To Make It

STEP 1

Set up your cloudBit if you haven’t done so already. Instructions for setting up the cloudBit can be found here.

STEP 2

Connect your circuit: USB power + cloudBit + mp3 player + speaker. We held our circuit together with littleBits adhesive shoes.

Click here to see the circuit diagram.

STEP 3

Load audio files onto the mp3 player. Remove the SD card from the base of the board by pressing it in. It should pop out :). Place the SD card in an SD card adapter, pop it into your computer, and add any .mp3 files you like. When you are done, place the SD card back in the mp3 player. Make sure it clicks in place.

STEP 4

Set the mp3 player to “once mode”. This way, the same clip will play each time you receive an email from your specified person. If you want to mix it up and have different sound clips play each time, set the mp3 player to “next” mode. Quickly test the mp3 player by pressing the button in Cloud Control. If your sound clip plays, you are ready to set up your IFTTT recipe.

STEP 5

Create an account on IFTTT.com and activate the littleBits channel.

STEP 6

Set up the notification with IFTTT’s Gmail channel. The recipe should read: IF [email protected] sends me an email, THEN trigger my “you’ve got mail” circuit.

STEP 7

Now you are all set! Stay in touch and don’t leave your pen pal hanging!
