UMD-P1, The Undercover Message Droid Prototype 1

by the three J's and S

Published on August 31, 2017

UMD-P1 is a multipurpose message/treat/flashlight deliverer.  Simply hold your hand in front of it and it will raise or lower whatever small item you may have attached to its lifting cable (or string).  This is particularly handy in passing notes between bunk beds when you're supposed to be sleeping, sharing that candy stash that wasn't ok'd, or even passing a secret device to your rebel spy buddy in cell number 24.

Connect the mounting board block to the wheel base. Attach the DC motor, wire, and control hub Bits to the front of the mounting boards. Then, connect the mounting boards to the plastic base. Cover the whole thing with the Droid shell, making sure that the open window is facing forward. Attach the power, proximity sensor, and wire Bits to the back of the Droid shell. Attach the plastic panel to the window, lining up the DC motor with the square opening. Attach the screw arm to the DC motor, wind some clear thread on it, and place the head on top. Now you're all set!

For UMD-P1's deceptively cuddly bear costume we made a simple fur bear shell based on the contours of our Droid's shape and a tutorial that showed us how to measure, cut, and sew it all together. There are many more simple and easy tutorials online for first time bear-makers. Be creative!

That's all folks! Simply attach your package to the clear string, hold your hand in front of UMD-P1, and before you know it you'll be smuggling goodies like a pro.
