Spin Roller

MAKE A TOPSY TURVY ROLLING VEHICLE THAT DOES FLIPS WHILE IT ROLLS! What kind of tricks can you do?

This project is a REMIX of the ROTOLAMP. You can start either build the Spin Roller from scratch or if you already made the Rotolamp, just make a few small adjustments to your circuit as seen below.

These instructions correspond to the first edition of the Gizmos & Gadgets Kit. If you have the Gizmos & Gadgets Kit: 2nd Edition, please refer to those instructions. They can be found here.

How To Make It

STEP 1 : You’re going to build two circuits that communicate with each other wirelessly. First build the SPIN ROLLER CIRCUIT. Set both DC motors to variable (var) mode.

STEP 2 : ADD WHEELS TO THE DC MOTORS.

STEP 3 : Press the SPIN ROLLER CIRCUIT onto a mounting board. Stick the battery to the back of the mounting board with Glue Dots or tape.

Pro Tip: The battery acts as a counterweight for this vehicle to help it flip over. Try sticking it to different spots on the mounting board and see what happens.

STEP 4 : Now, build the TRANSMITTER CIRCUIT. This will be the remote control for the Spin Roller.

STEP 5 : Press the TRANSMITTER CIRCUIT onto a mounting board. Make sure you flip the dimmer as shown in the image. Stick the battery down with Glue Dots.

The slide dimmers also need to face opposite directions because the DC motors are facing opposite directions on the Spin Roller circuit. This will make controlling your bot much easier. 

STEP 6 : TEST YOUR CIRCUITS. On both circuits, turn power on. Make sure the wireless receiver is on the SAME CHANNEL (a,b,c,d, or e) as your transmitter.

You can change the channel by pressing the little button on each of the boards. Now when you slide the dimmers, the wheels will spin.

STEP 7 : CONTROLLING YOUR SPIN ROLLER.

The middle position of the slide dimmers (~2.5V) will stop the wheels. Pushing both slide dimmers in the same direction will move it forwards or backwards. Take it for a spin and make it dance. How many flips can you do?
