Lantern with a boost

July 24, 2013

Looking to give your classic Flickering lantern project a boost? Add one of the great inputs included in the new "Sense It Boost It" pack. Now you can light the way with a motion, sound, or light activated lantern!

How To Make It

STEP 1

Let's begin by creating the circuit! Connect the following bits in this order: power + sound trigger (light trigger, motion trigger) + pulse + wire + rgb led

STEP 2

Use your little purple screwdriver to adjust the speed of the pulse. This will change the rate that your "flame" flickers.

STEP 3

Use your little purple screwdriver again to adjust the color of the rgb led.

STEP 4

After you have your circuit built, turn your cup upside down so that the wider part is on the table.

STEP 5

Next, measure the diameter of the big end of your cup. We are going to cut rings out of cardboard to act as the base of your lantern. Write down the diameter.

STEP 6

Now add 0.5" inch to your inner diameter. This will provide a small lip around your lantern. This new measurement (with 0.5" added) is your outer diameter.

STEP 7

Next, draw your two ring sizes on cardboard & cut them out. We cut out about 6 rings for our lantern's bottom, but you can cut out as many as you'd like!

STEP 8

You will need to cut out one more circle that is the same size as your lantern's base outer diameter. This time, we want to cut out a circle & not a ring. This circle will act as the bottom most piece of lantern that holds everything in.

STEP 9

Paint the top of your plastic cup in white. And cut two holes on the top. ( Make sure they are big enough the battery cable can pass through.) Make a hole on the side of your cup, so your sensor can see outside.

STEP 10

Cut a strip of cardboard about 1 inch thick. Fold it over the cup and mark where the holes are. Then cut the holes out. Tape the cardboard strip down to the cup.

STEP 11

Take your rings and fit them on the bottom of your lantern (the opening of the cup). Place your Bits inside and then tape them inside of the cup. Make sure the sensor and the hole on your cup are aligned.

STEP 12

Place the rgb bit on the bottom circle, and tape it down.

STEP 13

Place the top part of the lantern on the bottom circle.

STEP 14

Put two push pins on the top ring, opposite of each other. And use a rubber band to hold everything in place.

STEP 15

You are all done! Try out the different sensors and have fun!
