Big Wheel

This project is a series of wheels powered by one DC motor and the speed is controlled by dimmer. It carries the motion through gears, creating different visual effects.  Big Wheel is a scaled down model of an installation featured in our MoMA Store window displays.  

How To Make It

STEP 1

Step1: Take a power module and connect the battery cable and 9V battery to it. Be sure that the teeny on/off switch on the power module is switched to "on". 

Assemble your circuit: power+slide dimmer+wire+dc motor. Note that instead of the slide dimmer you can really use ANY input you like. In our case we got picky and went for a dimmer and added a button to make it more tactile.

STEP 2

Step2: Laser cut the triangle wheel holders, big gear, and medium gear out of wood. Download the template attached below called "Big Wheel_gears template_14in x 17in.pdf" or if you want illustrator files: 'Big Wheel_gears template 6.ai' 'Big Wheel_gears template 7.ai'. 'big wheel_laser cut template 5.ai' 'big wheel_laser cut template 4.ai' 'big wheel_laser cut template 1.ai'

STEP 3

Step 3: Laser cut the small gear with acrylic. See the template attached below called "Big Wheel_gears template_14in x 17in.pdf" or if you want illustrator files: 'Big Wheel_gears template 7.ai'. 

STEP 4

Step 4: Create the graphic pattern surfaces. Download the template attached below called "Print out the template attached below called "Big Wheel laser cut template_11in x 17in.pdf". 

Using colored paper and foam core, make the big and medium wheels. It is recommended to cut the bike wheels and body with chip board and colored paper. Glue three layers of bike wheel spokes with 120 degrees apart. Use illustrator files: 'big wheel_laser cut template 2.ai' 'big wheel_laser cut template 3.ai' 'big wheel_laser cut template 4.ai' 'big wheel_laser cut template 5.ai'

STEP 5

Step 5: Assemble the big wheel: big triangle holder with dc motor shelf (with dc motor in place) + big triangle holder + curvy graphic pattern + big wood gear + straight graphic pattern + wood circle. Put a shoulder spacer through the center of all the materials, and use a shoulder screw and nut to secure them.

STEP 6

Step 6: Assemble the medium wheel: medium triangle holder + medium wood gear + medium wheel graphic pattern + medium triangle holder. Repeat instructions from previous step.

STEP 7

Step 7: Assemble the bike: small triangle holder + 2 acrylic circles + bike back wheel pattern + small acrylic gear + small triangle holder. Repeat instructions from previous step.

STEP 8

Step 8: Use glue to attach the bike body to the outside of the shoulder screw.

STEP 9

Step 9: Align the wheels. Make sure the gears' teeth are touching and are all spinning. Cut small wooden blocks to secure the three triangle wheel holders in place. Secure everything down to a wooden base. Secure the bits to the base as well.

STEP 10

Step 10: Now press the button to start the spinning wheels! You can also control the wheels' speed by adjusting the dimmer.
