This video will make you think twice about your media consumption

Are we too addicted to tech?

October 26, 2016

As an electronics company, we’re constantly trying to find the right balance between personal technology, and technology as a way to connect with others. Many artists and musicians also consider this, and comment on the state of technology in society with their work. Recently, Moby released an animated music video for his latest single, “Are You Lost in the World Like Me?” He collaborated with the visual artist Steve Cutts for a profound reflection on our society’s attachment to smartphones and social media.

We think screen time isn’t necessarily bad, but we need to reinvent it – use screens to turn kids and adults into thoughtful inventors and innovators. For us, it’s about helping the world and not shutting it out.

Watch below and follow the protagonist’s journey into a bleak and dismal world. The protagonist tries to interact with people who literally cannot be pulled away from their phones. From mindless social media consumption to emotional detachment and reactive violence, the viewer can see the extreme effects of tech’s overuse on the human condition.

The video makes us ask: is this bleak future possible? It’s so easy for us to get wrapped up in our phones, our social media timelines, beautiful images, and the need to be constantly stimulated.

Cutts made the video to comment on society’s increasing dependence on technology: “For me the video is about our increasing dependence on technology and about human interaction today, or a certain lack of it. It focuses on the way tech is changing us, how we have become desensitized and also the general pace of the way we live today, the things we prioritize now.”

What do you think? Do we as a society rely on our smartphones way too much?
