Meet the Inventor

Alexander Mamonov

Alexander family

Pictured above is Alexander at home with his parents.  Recently he built the Voldemort Disarmer, with Bits and accessories from the Gizmos & Gadgets Kit, 2nd Edition.  When Alexander shakes his phone like a magic wand, the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Bit makes the tip of Harry Potter’s wand glow.  Next the servo opens the box and starts automatically battling He Who Shall Not Be Named.

Where are you based?
I’m from Michigan.

How would you describe yourself in six words or less?
I’m curious, daring, creative, persistent, and focused.

What was your littleBits “a-ha!” moment? The moment you were bitten by the littleBits bug.
My first aha-moment was when I realized I could attach littleBits to different everyday household objects and make them fun and cooler to use. For example, I found out I could attach littleBits to my guitar and make it play itself (see Guitar of the Future).

When starting a littleBits project, what does your design and video process look like?
My process is:
1) I brainstorm what I want to make/improve.
2) I take the Bits and try to make a physical copy of my brainstorm.
3) Once I have the rough draft of the circuit done, I take what I have and see if there is room for stuff to add or if I have to improvise.
4) I see if I can decorate what I have and make it look more detailed.
5) One of the most important steps, I test my creation.
6) I get ready to make a video about it. I discuss with my family what to say and do.
7) I make the video presentation and play around with my creation.

How has littleBits impacted you creatively?
It impacted my creativity by making me think, “How can I recreate this object and make it very fun to use.”  I am a huge fan of Legos, so I always try to think beyond the brick and that is what littleBits inspired me to do.

What do you plan on inventing next?
I am planning to make a regular Lego car and transform it into a littleBits powered roadster.
