littleBits with STEAM

‘Children should learn to code’, it’s a simple message that in recent years, has come to dominate much of the discussion around the development of the computing and technology curriculum. A range of government, public and privately funded initiatives have highlighted the value of introducing children to coding and computer science. Its role in the broader agenda of encouraging better engagement with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). As a result of this increased focus, a number of products have emerged onto the market that blend hardware, software, creative thinking and play as a key learning mechanism. This echoes a broader call to encourage more interdisciplinary and creative thinking, initially driven by the video games industry, turning the STEM debate, to STEAM with the addition of the Arts. This workshop introduces a playful learning technology product, ‘littleBits’. The product is quickly attracting a growing following in schools, particularly in the US. However, the products pricing means that kitting out a classroom with sufficient ‘bits’ to ensure a good experience for all students does represent a significant financial investment.

What is STEAM? STEM education refers to the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEAM education incorporates the “A” for the arts – recognizing that to be successful in technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills which are best developed through exposure to the arts.

What are Littlebits? They are easy to use electronic building blocks that snap together magnetically. They allow people of all ages to build innovations and creations using the bits and their imaginations.

Check out the site to learn more: http://littlebits.cc/
Sign up to join our local chapter: http://littlebits.cc/community/chapters/inventors-society

What should you expect during our workshop? We will start with an icebreaker and explain how the bits work. Then we will provide a challenge and put the kids into groups to start inventing. The hands on portion of the session will last around 3 hours. Participants do not have to stay for the entire time but should plan to join the first half for instructions and ground rules.

PLEASE NOTE: All littlebits and materials will be returned at the end of the workshop so inventions will not be taken home.

What to bring? If you have a mobile or tablet device, please bring it so you can use for research and to take photos/videos.

September Hack Day

Join us for monthly Hack Days - time dedicated to building, learning and tinkering in a collaborative setting. Whether you are ready to build a new feature, want to improve your coding skills, or explore design thinking, Hack Days are a great way to get in the habit of building. Plus, it’s a chance to meet more members of the startup community, outside of head-down & focus work-time, and we provide loads of coffee & lunch.

NEW: Taking a page out of the playbooks of some of our best community meetups, we will now have mentors on-hand to offer code reviews, pair-programming sessions, and answer questions.

Requirements: Idea or project to work on (even a class assignment), software or hardware focused, all-skill levels welcome.

Equipment Available: littleBits, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Bluetooth beacon, RFID kit, and Leap Motion. (Ask Warren if you would like to access any of these resources.)

Schedule

9:00am: Doors Open

10:30-11:30am: Project Workshop

12:00pm: Lunch Break

1:00pm: Continue working on projects or attend a workshop

1:00-3 :00pm: Free Code Camp Meetup

5:00pm: wrap up, high fives

Still wondering if Hack Day is for you? Our advice is to come down and give it a try! For expert and intermediate level participants, it’s an opportunity to get feedback on your work and spend time on passion products. For beginners, it’s a great way to dedicate time to learn a new skill.
