Intro to Arduino

Learn the basics of electronics and then move on to understanding and programming the fantastically versatile and affordable Arduino board.

An Arduino is an open-source microcontroller development board. In plain English, you can use the Arduino to read sensors and control things like motors and lights. This allows you to upload programs to this board which can then interact with things in the real world. With this, you can make devices which respond and react to the world at large.

This hands-on workshop will prepare you with the fundamental skills and knowledge that you need to start working with electronics and get your Arduino up and running. Additionally, we will show you easy projects for you to do on your own, with clear instructions and parts lists as well as information about additional reference material.

Week of Robotics Readiness

Our full week of Robotics Readiness Summer Camp is designed to take each student from being an absolute beginner in electronics to having built several useful electronic circuits. We start with littleBits and soon advance on to using actual electronic parts such as resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits and sensors to construct each circuit using breadboards. Each project is designed to build on the last with the overall goal of ensuring our students understand what they’re building.

This camp is three hours a day for five days. We can't wait to get started!

September Hack Day

Join us for monthly Hack Days - time dedicated to building, learning and tinkering in a collaborative setting. Whether you are ready to build a new feature, want to improve your coding skills, or explore design thinking, Hack Days are a great way to get in the habit of building. Plus, it’s a chance to meet more members of the startup community, outside of head-down & focus work-time, and we provide loads of coffee & lunch.

NEW: Taking a page out of the playbooks of some of our best community meetups, we will now have mentors on-hand to offer code reviews, pair-programming sessions, and answer questions.

Requirements: Idea or project to work on (even a class assignment), software or hardware focused, all-skill levels welcome.

Equipment Available: littleBits, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Bluetooth beacon, RFID kit, and Leap Motion. (Ask Warren if you would like to access any of these resources.)

Schedule

9:00am: Doors Open

10:30-11:30am: Project Workshop

12:00pm: Lunch Break

1:00pm: Continue working on projects or attend a workshop

1:00-3 :00pm: Free Code Camp Meetup

5:00pm: wrap up, high fives

Still wondering if Hack Day is for you? Our advice is to come down and give it a try! For expert and intermediate level participants, it’s an opportunity to get feedback on your work and spend time on passion products. For beginners, it’s a great way to dedicate time to learn a new skill.

STEM Video Game & Pizza Party

Join us to play games, eat pizza, raise funds and awareness for our Mobile Makerspace and Lending Library. There is something for everyone, and all ages are welcome. You can experience, hands-on, what we have to offer and celebrate technology. Learning isn't lame! Funds raised at this event will be used to strengthen our program, and acquire new library resources to offer schools.

Play and hack Minecraft on a Kano computer!
Play cardboard pinball that is powered by Arduino!
Build your own arcade games using Snap Circuits!
Play retro games on a tiny Raspberry Pi!
Use bananas for a controller!
Battle Codeybots, or maybe have a dance off? You decide!
Make Wonder with Dash and Dot!
Play games engineered with littleBits!
And, you know, other games

The cherry on top: Claim your title as King or Queen of the road in a Mario Kart tournament (details to follow).

Admission is $10 at the door, includes as much pizza as you can eat, beverages, and access to all the games. Stay and play all day, or just hang out for a bit - it's your call :)

If you or your child have any dietary restrictions or allergies, please let us know in advance so that we may do our best to accommodate.

We want to foster a community of knowledge sharing, and share what we have with our community. Our dream is to put our resources within reach of every school in the Detroit Public School system, and beyond. We can introduce STEAM subjects in a fun and inspiring way that was designed especially for children. Educators can share their classroom tips (and more) with each other, and children will be able to share experiences with students at other schools.

Young Explorer littleBits Event - Spring 2016

Young Explorer's popular Electronics and Modular Robotics program is back again. Powered by the littleBits Melbourne Chapter, young students will understand how electronics work. With a simple click of magnets, students get to connect the littleBits and form various circuits in a fun and non-explosive way (yup, no circuit will blow up!) and undertake Bit projects. All in all, students understand how circuits work in their homes, the use of switches, LEDs, extension wires and how to make things move.

Moving over to the robotics module, students will be introduced to the Cubelets which are Sense, Think and Action blocks. Not just ordinary blocks but each block is a tiny computer module and when combined with other Cubelets become a variety of different robots. What's more, Modular Robotics is an introduction to robotics without programming and wires. Best suited to introduce young students into the big world of robotics.

A STEAM module for the curious Young Explorer.
