As part of the curriculum for the University of Pittsburgh's Art of Making Engineering course, we were given the chance to design and fabricate a product for use in a real world setting. Having used littleBits in many of the class projects, we were inspired to create a new module for the system. The Happy Happy Joy Bit is the result.
The Happy Happy Joy Bit (The Joystick module) is an input module that uses the variable resistance inside a joystick to make changes to the input based on the direction that the joystick is pressed. At rest, the joystick will output half the input on the paths effected by the joystick. When the stick is moved, the angle and depth which is displaced will cause a change of output up to full input or down to 0. The 2 axes can be controlled separately and each have an output. A third output is controlled by pressing the joystick down. At rest, it outputs the full input. When clicked, it cuts the output to zero.
The module was originally designed for controlling multiple servo motors at once, but is equally useful with all other modules. In the pictures, the smaller of the two is the conceptual prototype and is meant to represent our vision for the final look of the module. Note that side bitsnaps may be better suited to be flush with the side of the module. The larger module is our fully functional module made to the specifications set by the design documents. Its size is due to the fact that we did not have the ability to print a circuit board and so had to wire everything by hand.

For our end of the year project we were inspired to create a new way to control the littleBits system. The Joystick Bit was what we came up with.
