Bring your body’s electricity to life! Control your littleBits modules with your muscles! Make a musical instrument that reacts to your movements or do experiments to learn more about neuroscience!
The EMG SpikerBox module detects the electrical activity of human muscles non-invasively using simple skin surface electrodes. You can record EMGs from large muscles, or individual motor action potentials (or “spikes”) from smaller ones!

We started Backyard Brains because the only way to really learn about neuroscience was to go to grad school... even though 25% of the world has brain disorders with no cures. Our goal is to develop tools and experiments to teach electrophysiology from middle school on up. Electrophysiology is truly is how the brain works. From “spikes” to “cyborgs” to “neuroprosthetics”, we build something of interest for every student. Understanding the brain remains a great challenge, both to professional neuroscientists and the general public alike. We want to increase the public’s understanding of neuroscience, create a community of amateur neuroscientists, and usher in the next generation of neuroscientists.
